Nathaniel Rochester Hall (Seventh Floor), RIT
In the dorms, my first year at RIT, I was stuck on an all guys floor and was tripled to start off with 2 other guys. I thought it was going to be terrible, but I got used to it, and the people I got to know on that floor are still among my best friends (well, some of them).Roommates
- Robert Sbert
- Pronounced "spurt" -- cool guy (or at least he was when "we" (see below) first met him then we turned him into somewhat of a computer geek), Puerto Rican decent, thus the weird name. He introduced me to the rock group Rush (I've since seen two Rush concerts). Bob now works at Xerox and is back, taking courses toward his Masters Degree at RIT.
- Chris Kohanek
- A guy from Miami, FL who later moved out of the "tripled" room and into a room with someone else. He sticks with "us" (see below) for quite a while before he is essentially "purged" for lack of a better word. Since the likelihood is that he will someday find this page, I won't drudge up any details of the falling out, but we met again years later and conversed in a fairly civil way. Last known location: back in Miami
- Noah, Steve and Ari (see below)
- all lived on that floor also.
Home (in RD 1, Montoursville, Pennsylvania)
Then I went home for the summer. Home home. Like where I lived all my life and my parents still live. You can even pinpoint that location if you wish.NRH 7 South Crew, RIT
Well, since "we" (this is the us/we I've been speaking of) all managed to miss apartment sign-up, we decided to make the best of it, and pick a chunk of rooms that were all at the southern end of the NRH 7 hallway (thus the name "South Crew"). We all thought we were much cooler than we actually were... Well, 3 of us had "The Pump" so we (myself not included) were close to cool. Steve was by far the coolest... I want to be like Steve when I grow up. We also had our female counterparts (well, not exactly counterparts, but there were the famed "Ballistic Bitches" (Tiff (see below) was one of them) who (for who knows what reason) tended to hang out with us. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. We even had a quote board... Maybe I'll dredge it up someday. Oh, and Keb and some of her friends even came around now and then.Floormates (Crewmates?)
- Ari Stotland
- Actually my "Roommate" as we lived in the Southeast corner of the floor. He was quite well known on the RIT VAX system.
- Chris Kohanek
- Chris lived in the middle room (alone for one quarter and then Brian moved in).
- Brian English
- Brian had a tendency to play with his Commodore 64 too much which ultimately cost him... A pretty nice guy, whom I initially introduced to the group, but then slowly fell away from us and out of RIT. For a while he was known to be working a Darien Lake, and now has resurfaced after all of these years and apparently is doing technical support for Sony! (Amazing how the web and usenet can get people back in touch...) Hi, Brian! -- sorry it took me so long to rewrite your entry!
- Noah Bast
- Noah is one of my closest friends. I didn't know him really well my first year until we all moved into the "South Crew". I still live with Noah and his wife Tiff, but that doesn't come until much further down this page. For now, lets just say he's Computer Science major in transition to Computer Engineering Technology and eventually into Information Technology, much like me. Amazing how similar we actually are, although very different in many ways.
- J. Steven Mayer (Steve)
- He and Noah lived in the Southwest corner of the floor. Steve was a Computer Science major who actually stuck through it all the way... He graduated in the Spring of 1994, and until just recently, lived in New York City and worked for Merrill Lynch. He had continued to live with "us" up until that time, too.
El Caribe (Daytona Beach, FL)
During my Summer Project with Campus Crusade for Christ, I lived in a hotel room with three other guys Jeff, Todd, and Steve. It was cramped and there are tons of great memories, but I can't get into all of that right now... Truly the best summer of my life, so far.51-1 Colony Manor Apartments, RIT
Well, we all (Me, Steve, Noah, and Chris) all signed up for the apartment lottery, but all got crappy numbers so we couldn't all get an apartment together. A serious disappointment, but we at least got two one-bedroom apartments in the same apartment complex, Colony Manor.Apartmentmates (Complexmates?)
- Noah Bast
- Noah and I chose to take one of the two apartments, although he wasn't able to come back in the fall, so I lived alone until winter, during which he got sick (some evil combination of mono and pneumonia) and left again until he was able to come back in time to catch up in spring quarter.
- Steve and Chris
- Took the other apartment, because Steve was the most compatible with Chris's personality. They lived essentially "across the parking lot" from us, but the amount of time that we actually spent hanging out with each other was minimal. During this time, Keb and Steve had gotten pretty serious.
199 Westbrooke Commons Apartments, Rochester, NY
We left RIT apartments because we had a golden opportunity to all move to a new place together. We wound up subletting an apartment in a complex called Westbrooke Commons near RIT. We broke the lease in about a dozen ways, and decided (perhaps through neglecting the decision) to move at the end of the summer. This was truly a messed up time in my life (in between majors and jobs, in between houses, in a "bad" relationship, and in a very spiritual low). I lived in the basement, along with two upright video games, a BBS, and a big ugly (although utilitarian) green couch.Apartmentmates (Townhousemates?)
- Noah and Steve
- They shared the huge upstairs room.
- Chris
- Took the smaller upstairs room.
164 Clearview Farms Apartments, Scottsville, NY
Of all the place I've lived (before where I'm currently living) this was my favorite. A nice Townhouse in Scottsville, NY. Two years we lived there, and even got two cats (Gypsy and Tom Servo)! Sigh... I miss those days sometimes. Although when I think about it, there are definitely things I don't miss.Apartmentmates (Townhousemates?)
- Steve Mayer
- He was an initial housemate, and lived there the whole time, except one quarter when his room was rented by Scott Siers (whom was never really a part of the crew), until he eventually graduated (and then his room was left for us to rent again (see below). Somewhere in there, Kathryn "Keb" Boylan (as mentioned previously) came to live with us, although for part of the time she still officially lived at the U of R.
- Chris Kohanek
- Chris stayed for one full year until he left. I eventually moved into his vacated room.
- Noah Bast
- Until that time, I shared a room with Noah. From the time I moved from Colony until the time that I moved into my own room in Clearview, most of my stuff was in a complete disarray, and much of it still is. This completely goes against my nature, which is actually to be quite organized, but for some reason, I haven't ever gotten around to straightening out my disorganized "stuff" (until very very recently).
- Tiffany Hunt
- Noah's Girlfriend (and soon, fiance) moved in and soon, out went the cats (due to her asthma and alergic reactions) The cats now live with Keb's parents. Tiff is now Noah's wife, but they weren't married until the summer of 1995. We all knew Tiff back on NRH 7, when she hung out with some of the other lamers on our floor, but she eventually came around... :)
- Lorrie Whalen
- Hmmm... What can I say? Lorrie moved in with us in Steve's absence (and upon recommendation from Raymond (see below)). Somehow it didn't work out all that well, and she wound up slamming her door in frustration far too often compared to what any of us were used to. Nevertheless, when we all left Clearview, we were on decent terms (although I have no intention of actually trying to collect it, she still owes me money...)
35 Crosman Terrace, Rochester, NY
Ugh. What a place! Huge! Although we moved into this house in a rush and then back out in an even bigger rush, we spent a good 9 months there. This place was in the city, or well, close to it. We got socked with an extra month's rent at the previous place (Clearview) because we got out about 2 days too late. And moved into a sometimes frustrating rental situation where the couple that actually owned this house was trying to sell it, so we had a month-to-month lease which jumped in rent during the coldest month of the year. To this day we loathe the landlords, but really like the realtor who was the go between and actually helped Noah and Tiff find a new house (where we are now). If you're looking for an agent, we recommend Steve Ward who works for RE/MAX here in Rochester, NY.. :)This house was cold and had lots of hardwood floors, and there were drug arrests two houses down. It actually had 4 and 1/2 bathrooms! Amazing.
Housemates
- Noah and Tiff
- The soon-to-be-married couple shared the big room. I lived across the hall in my own room.
- Raymond De Roo
- A guy that Noah and I met back when we were running The Vanishing Point BBS from out of Clearview Farms. Ray is truly one of the most unique individuals I have ever met. Never completely sure how much of him is/was for real. He continued to hang out with us while we were living in Colony and then when we moved, lived with us for about 4 months until he needed to move for money and "fatherhood" reasons. Ray is now married to a great girl named Jessica, and they live in a house in Rochester not all that far from where this house was. He worked for E-Znet when it first started up, and now works at Applied Graphics Technologies with Noah.
- Keb (Kathryn E. Boylan)
- Keb came back to live with use for about 8 months while she finished her schooling at the University of Rochester. She got married to Steve in August of 1996 and they live(d) in New York City.
- Trudy Zobel
- Trudy, I had known since May of the previous year (when I was still in Colony), and then corresponded to over the summer, and then was going out with in the Fall. We gradually fell apart and she found her new boyfriend (and current fiance), Eric. She and I are still good friends, and up until the Spring of 1997, she was living with Noah, Tiff, and I in the next place on this list. I can hardly say she "lived" in Crosman Terrace, although she did "keep her stuff here" for about a week before Noah, Tiff, and I moved into the house on Beakrush lane. She then stayed in an RIT apartment for two months of the summer before moving in with us.
19 Beakrush Lane, West Henrietta, NY
At last we come to the house in which I currently live. It's a great place. Noah and Tiff (who got married on August 26, 1995) actually own the place, and I (and Trudy for a while) are like Kato Kaelins (sorta).Housemates
- Noah and Tiffany Bast
- Yup. By the way, I was the best man at the wedding. They just celebrated their 2nd year Anniversary
- Trudy Zobel
- Lived here for 2 years... I just recently moved into the room that she was occupying, and my old room has now become a den/guest room... So there will be no other housemates. The next resident of my room will either be Noah and Tiff's child or the next people to own the house. :)
